The fundraising hall of fame

We’ve had some wonderful supporters achieve incredible things to support us as we overcome some of the world’s toughest problems. If you are an individual fundraising or a school, business or community-based group we’d be delighted to work with you and add you to our fundraising hall of fame!

Vicki’s radical change

Vicki Bromwich, a personal development coach from Rugby, asked family, friends and colleagues to sponsor her for an unusual fundraiser. She said: “Practical Action’s radical thinking and actions prove there’s an alternative to how we lived before Coronavirus, where people no longer live in poverty and we take care of the planet. So I decided to do something radical to support them.” Vicki’s husband, John, admits he didn’t really want her to shave her hair off, or to be the one to do it, but he was behind her all the way: “When Vicki decides to do something, she does it with passion. I think it’s incredible what she’s achieved, and I am very proud to support her.”

Vicki became a Practical Action supporter a couple of years ago and sees a shared sensibility between her work and our approach. “In my work, I help clients to become more self-sufficient, and I really admire the way Practical Action creates lasting change so people can generate their own prosperity. Some of my friends are quite shocked, but, for me, shaving my hair off at this time seems an effective way to raise money for an important cause.”

Vicki has raised over £1,700, which will go towards our work to make a world that works better for everyone. A big thanks to Vicki for her brave fundraiser, and to all her family, friends and colleagues for sponsoring her.

Swimpact 12-hour Swimathon

Kristine Huang of Bangkok Patana International School in Thailand wrote to us in October 2017 to let us know she was organising an amazing fundraising event combining her two passions of swimming and service. Kristine and two of her swimmates, with the support of her swim team the Tigersharks Varsity, hosted a large fundraising event to raise money for Practical Action in December 2017.

On the 12th day of the 12th month, the event, Swimpact, involved students and teachers from the Bangkok Patana International School swimming for 12 hours. The team raised almost $5,500 equating to over £4,050 – an amazing achievement! Thank you to everyone who took part.

Apperley Quarter Marathon

In September 2017, Gloucestershire Poet Laureate, Brenda Read-Brown completed the Apperley Quarter Marathon to raise funds for Practical Action. Brenda really enjoyed training, recalling “Running alongside wheat fields early in the mornings was a joy! And I’m a poet, so it gave me the opportunity to work on poems in my head, with a bit of peace and quiet.”

Brenda raised over £250 and really appreciated the support at the event, “It was lovely that people were standing along the route, cheering on even the slow ones like me – this was a real boost.”
