Practical Action's work in Bangladesh has evolved over time to meet the challenges of poverty, inequality and vulnerability. Deeply committed to helping the poor in Bangladesh, our work on appropriate technology as a means to improve poor peoples livelihoods has been flexible and responsive to local conditions and needs.
Practical Action, through its programmes in Bangladesh, works primarily by:
- developing, upgrading, demonstrating and putting into practice appropriate technology within communities using participatory approaches.
- giving skills training and extending capacity building support to NGO/GO staff
- sharing knowledge and disseminating information and research findings among key stakeholders
- enabling producers and entrepreneurs information and skills for making access to market opportunities and linkages
- promoting advocacy and influencing for policy change

Growing crops after the floods
Barren sandbars can be used to grown crops such as pumpkins by filling pits with household compost.
Every year floods wash away fertile land and destroy homes, forcing families to find a new place to live and a new means of earning a living without land to cultivate.
Practical Action are working with communities to grow crops on the sandbars created by river deposits, and how this can be used to increase crop production for marginalised famers.

Practical Action Consulting Bangladesh offers high quality and responsive development consultancy services to various clients including governments, NGOs and international agencies.
The Krishi Call Centre is a Freephone call centre run jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Agricultural Information Service, and offers advice on livestock, fisheries and agriculture.
We have also established a Gyaner Haat (Knowledge Bazaar) network, centres that sell internet services and work with extension workers/knowledge brokers to answer technical enquiries in the community.
Our technical information service offers free downloads of practical information on a range of development topics.
We also have a technical enquiry service where anyone working in poverty reduction, or on small-scale technology projects, can ask a question and receive a response from our local experts free of charge
