Nepal’s mountainous terrain is breathtaking, with eight of the world’s ten tallest mountains. Yet, it is also challenging as it’s exposed to various risks, such as floods and landslides, which increase due to its high vulnerability to climate change. Moreover, farming is complex, and access to energy and markets for trade is limited.

A country full of opportunities
Nepal is blessed with an abundance of natural resources. However, poverty and inequality affect much of the population. These issues are worsened by the occurrence of extreme climate hazards such as floods, landslides and droughts. In recent years, climate change has increased the frequency of such catastrophes and made communities more vulnerable to their impacts. It is vital to transform the structural and societal factors contributing to poverty and strengthen people’s ability to adapt to our changing climate.
Practical Action has worked closely with communities in Nepal since 1979. By combining technical expertise and local knowledge, our projects have led to improvements in climate resilience, agriculture, energy access, and entrepreneurship. We consistently put communities’ voices and needs at the centre of project design. To ensure that positive impacts have longevity and continuity beyond our involvement, we also work in partnership with the private sector, government institutions, civil society and community groups.
