Addressing challenges for thriving futures

Bangladesh is one of the world’s largest and most densely populated river deltas.

Its low-lying geography makes it highly vulnerable to flooding and other environmental challenges. Rising sea levels could cover 17% of its land by 2050, causing around 20 million people to lose their homes and move away. Floods and cyclones combined with rapid population growth and inadequate infrastructure are straining existing water and sanitation systems. Lives are at risk from inadequate and unsafe waste and sanitation management.

We support rural and urban communities to overcome these issues and become leaders in resilience and adaptation strategies, working towards cleaner, healthier, fairer places for people to live and work, and harnessing collaboration at local and national levels for effective, long-lasting solutions.

From poverty to prosperity

With remarkable resilience, innovative spirit and vast cultural heritage, Bangladesh is a vibrant country with its population living among a delta of rivers that flow into the Bay of Bengal. In recent years, a reduction in population growth and improved health and education have helped ease some of the country’s extreme poverty. But the gap between rich and poor continues to widen, and Bangladesh’s geography makes its people increasingly vulnerable to climate change.

Floods, cyclones, rising sea levels and other extreme weather events threaten lives, livelihoods and infrastructure. But, as the country copes with the changing climate, challenges, such as access to basic services, inequality and rapid urbanisation, mean Bangladesh needs to adapt promptly to provide a brighter, equitable future for all its citizens.

Established in 1990, Practical Action in Bangladesh focuses on improving living conditions for people living in poverty, supporting them to prosper and overcome the most challenging conditions in rural and urban areas. Our solutions combine our technical knowledge and vast on-the-ground experience to improve energy and clean cooking access, planet-friendly farming practices, water and sanitation, and waste management -all with gender equity and climate change resilience at their heart.
