Hundreds of people in Rwanda’s refugee camps and surrounding host communities are building more resilient livelihoods through solar-powered businesses.

Guidance to cut low-quality off-grid electrical appliances littering the homes and towns of some of the most vulnerable people in the world has been produced by Practical Action. Energy experts in Rwanda have spent months researching and found 50 per cent of small and medium sized businesses in off-grid areas had experienced poorly performing equipment.

Equipment which could unlock the potential of millions of displaced people around the world over the next decade and beyond will be trialled in Rwanda and Uganda. Energy experts from Practical Action have teamed up with academics from universities in Africa and Europe to test potentially life-changing equipment.

In partnership with Practical Action, Energy Saving Trust, co-Secretariat of Efficiency for Access, is delivering the Humanitarian Productive Use of Renewable Energy (H-PURE) demonstrator across three refugee camps and host communities in Rwanda.

In Mugombwa, Rwanda, a new project is helping young farmers in refugee camps and nearby communities improve their lives. The work will focus on empowering young people, women, and marginalised groups by boosting agricultural production and creating sustainable jobs.

A brand-new enterprise hub is set to transform the way refugees and residents living in and around Rwanda’s largest refugee camp can earn a living.

Practical Action has been awarded £500,000 in funding raised by players of  People’s Postcode Lottery, awarded by Postcode International Trust. The money will innovate real-world solutions to build sustainable lives and livelihoods for people living on the frontlines of poverty and climate change.
