Practical Action to Call for Greater Investment in Inclusive Clean Cooking Solutions at the Eastern Africa Clean Cooking Symposium
Practical Action’s Country Director for Rwanda, Denise Umubyeyi, will call for greater investment in clean cooking solutions that are inclusive, evidence-based and community driven when she speaks at the Eastern Africa Clean Cooking Symposium from 6-8 May 2025 in Arusha Tanzania. The event is organised by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).
Denyse will join a panel discussion on “Sharing Best Practices in Clean Cooking Innovations Across the Region.” Drawing on Practical Action’s experience across Africa, she will highlight how inclusive, market-based approaches are reaching last-mile and displaced communities that are often left behind by traditional energy markets.

She will highlight lessons from the Renewable Energy for Refugees (RE4R) project in Rwanda and the Women in Energy Enterprises in Kenya (WEEK) project, showcasing approaches that have strengthened local markets, empowered women, and improved livelihoods through clean energy access.
“Expanding access to clean cooking is about more than technology. It is about delivering practical, inclusive solutions that transform lives, particularly for women and displaced communities,” says Denise.
“At Practical Action, we have seen the real difference clean cooking and energy access can make. It is vital that investments are designed to reach those who need it most, and I look forward to sharing examples of how this can be achieved at scale.”
Clean cooking is central to Practical Action’s wider work to address climate change, improve health, protect natural resources, and create economic opportunities, especially for women and children. Our approach focuses on co-creating affordable, context-driven solutions with communities, ensuring that no one is left behind in the energy transition.
