Abstract
The Social Security Scheme (SSS) is a pioneering micro-insurance initiative designed by Practical Action to protect informal waste and sanitation workers in Bangladesh. Developed in partnership with Delta Life Insurance Company Ltd, the scheme addresses the extreme health and financial risks faced by these “unsung heroes” who operate in hazardous environments. The SSS provides comprehensive coverage, including life insurance, permanent disability benefits, and hospitalisation support for accidents and illnesses.
