Emptier to Entrepreneur - Ensuring dignity in the lives of waste and sanitation workers in Bangladesh

Abstract

Practical Action is working with informal sanitation and waste workers in Bangladesh to improve their dignity, working conditions and incomes, while also improving the safety, reliability and financial viability of waste services citywide. We are doing this through a transformative cooperative model where we support informal workers who are already delivering faecal sludge management and other waste and sanitation services in low-income communities to form cooperatives. This approach has resulted in formal service delivery agreements with municipalities, access to protective equipment and technologies for safer and more dignified work and better sanitation services for people living in previously underserved communities. This brief describes the approach, summarises our achievements and learnings, and sets out ambitions for the future of this work.
