Covering the 15 countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and three Sahel countries, this vibrant and dynamic region has diverse landscapes, from lush forests to one of the largest deserts in the world. Its growing population faces challenges in which collaboration is crucial. Energy access, sustainable farming, resilience to climate catastrophes and youth employment require a combination of solutions to unlock the vast opportunities that the region has to offer -all while dealing with the impacts of the climate crisis.

A region bursting with potential
West Africa faces tremendous development challenges and is one of the world’s most vulnerable to climate change and gender inequity. Most problems encountered here have a regional dimension, as the underlying factors are not limited to national borders. Poverty, food insecurity, the degradation of natural resources and environmental deterioration are just some of the challenges facing these countries. Therefore, taking a regional approach to collaboration and developing appropriate solutions is the most effective route to long-term, sustainable impact.
Our West Africa regional office, based in Senegal since 2014, has a wealth of experience in providing independent technical advice to change makers, including governments, NGOs, donors, and the private sector.
We develop and implement transformative programmes leveraging our extensive experience in energy, climate change, sustainable energy-agriculture nexus, and disaster risk reduction, reaching all 15 countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) plus the Sahel countries of Mauritania, Chad and Cameroun.
Our ambition is to make smallholder farming more efficient to adapt to climate change and achieve a good standard of living, help more people harness the transformational effects of renewable and affordable energy and build disaster resilience into the lives of people threatened by climate hazards.
A lot has been said about the abundance of natural resources in West Africa on the ground. This overlooks our best resource, the one above it: our people’s hopes and creative genius. We harness that power so it can blossom into ideas that are the product of collaboration, resonating with all involved; ideas that bring about practical and lasting solutions to the challenges we face; ideas that inspire action and transform the world.Edwin Obiero, Regional Director West Africa
