A fast-changing country
Rwanda is a small but rapidly evolving country in East Africa.
Mainly comprised of farmers, agriculture is the cornerstone of its economy. With a predominantly rural and youthful demographic, approximately 44.5% of Rwanda’s inhabitants are under 18 years old. Nurturing and empowering this emerging generation are a key objective.
The present administration has concentrated on bolstering political stability and fostering economic expansion. These initiatives have yielded significant improvements in the quality of life for Rwanda’s people; however, further progress is needed.
Over the past two decades, upheaval in neighbouring regions has propelled more than 150,000 people to seek refuge in Rwanda, leading to the establishment of various refugee camps. The Rwandan Government works alongside humanitarian and development organisations to offer fundamental services to people in these camps. Nonetheless, day-to-day life remains a challenge, made harder by limited access to electricity.
Our mission in Rwanda is centred around transformative energy solutions and sustainable farming practices. This mission draws from our extensive experience in providing energy access within refugee camps and extends to our international efforts.
Simple interventions like these can make a huge difference for individuals. When they are replicated and scaled up, so is the impact. This is Practical Action’s ‘Big change starts small’ philosophy in practice.Denyse Umubyeyi, Rwanda Director
