Small World Online

Issue 82 – May 2024

The future’s calling; How digital technology is powering positive change

In this issue of Small World magazine, we explore the intersection of traditional solutions and “new” technologies like mobile phones and solar panels. This edition arose from our supporters curiosity about whether these technologies fit E.F. Schumacher’s vision of “appropriate technology” for communities rising from poverty—an intriguing question that we explore throughout our pages.

When digital solutions like mobile phones are incorporated into wider holistic solutions, they can greatly increase the benefits to communities. They provide another tool to support people in overcoming challenges and leaving poverty behind.

In our special feature, meet three people who are harnessing the power of mobile technology to tackle their biggest challenges and build a brighter future for their communities.
