Practical Action’s support for the Terra Carta
2022 begins with backing for a coalition to deliver an economy with people and the planet at its heart.
Practical Action has announced our support for the Terra Carta, part of our Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales’ Sustainable Markets Initiative.
This charter of action aims to harness the power of nature and combine it with the transformative power, innovation and resources of the private sector to deal with the climate emergency.
Its focus on putting people, planet and nature at the heart of the economy, aligns well with Practical Action’s mission and approach.
Practical Action CEO, Sarah Roberts said:

“I believe it could dramatically shift corporate business models and change the enabling environment so that it encourages investment and action in a sustainable future and mobilises the financial system behind these goals.
“We work with partners to change systems that keep people poor and vulnerable to climate change. We also support people on the front line of climate change so that they can develop a sustainable future for themselves.
“The Terra Carta’s focus on building out from local realities to achieve a global economy that has nature, people and planet at its heart and its focus on a just and sustainable transition aligns with our aims and the ethos of our founder, visionary economist E.F Schumacher.”

Over the next ten years, the Terra Carta will serve as the guiding mandate for the Sustainable Markets Initiative.
It will be updated annually by the Initiative to reflect the rapid pace of change and continuous progress being achieved around the world.
Practical Action will be supporting this critical work and will be making sure that examples from around the world where the private sector is working for good are available to highlight what the Terra Carta might look like in practice.
Our examples include our work in Peru with coffee farmers, in Rwanda with Yogi Tea, in Malawi with women farmers and in Bangladesh, collecting plastic from waterways with waste workers and an environmental clean up company.
