Practical Action to feature in national Climate Change appeal

Practical Action is proud to partner with The Guardian and Observer’s Climate Justice Appeal.

We have already been chosen as one of four charities working in different ways to help people who are already dealing with the severe impacts of climate change.

The appeal will shine a spotlight on the devastating impact the climate crisis is already having on people around the world. Practial Action’s experience on the ground will highlight how, with the right approach, it is still possible to increase resilience and adaptation amongst the most vulnerable communities.

The campaign will feature our work in Bangladesh and Kenya where we are working with communities living on the front line of extreme climate events to adapt their livelihoods, so they can build a better future without having to leave their homes or communities.

Patrick Butler, Chair of the Guardian and Observer charity appeal committee, said:

Practical Action’s experience, track record and hands-on approach to working with communities to help them adapt to the challenges of extreme weather and climate change is both impressive and inspiring, and we felt they were a great fit for our overarching theme of climate justice.”

“Our work with communities highlights the injustice that those who have contributed the least to the climate emergency are suffering the most severe impacts. But it also shows how those on the frontline of the climate emergency can adapt and build resilience to a warming world.

“It is fitting that we were chosen by the Guardian and Observer, given that the entire organisation was born following a wave of support which came on the back of an article which appeared in The Observer in 1965.

“We are still driven by the values outlined in that article by our founder EF Schumacher. He believed in equipping people with the skills and knowledge to change their situation and to create economic systems that work for all so we can live within the planet’s means.”

The Guardian appeal will run between December 10, 2021, and January 10, 2022. The other selected charities are Global Greengrants Fund UK, Environmental Justice Foundation and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
