Practical Action has appointed Patrick Barker as Interim CEO to provide leadership continuity while the organisation undertakes a planned recruitment process for its next permanent Chief Executive.

Patrick joins Practical Action with strong expertise as an international development leader and interim executive. Throughout his career, he has helped mission-led organisations navigate change, strengthen organisational performance and maintain focus on delivering impact.

His background includes leadership roles across organisations working in Africa, Asia and Latin America, as well as interim appointments with Twin and ARTICLE 19. He has also worked for Christian Aid, and has extensive experience building partnerships with donors, funders and governments.

Patrick has been appointed on a nine-month contract. During this period, he will work closely with the Global Leadership Team to support delivery of Practical Action’s strategy and ensure continued progress against its objectives.

At the same time, the Board of Trustees will begin a comprehensive search for a permanent CEO. Colleagues across Practical Action will be consulted as the Board develops the profile and qualities required for the role, before a wider recruitment process begins. The aim is to appoint a permanent CEO in 2027, allowing sufficient time for a thorough search and a well-planned handover.

Patrick Barker said: “Practical Action stands out for delivering meaningful and lasting impact by addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing the world’s most vulnerable communities.”

“I look forward to playing my part in this vital work alongside a team with such passion, expertise and determination to create a better future for people and the planet, while helping ensure a smooth transition to the next permanent CEO.”

Sazini Mojapelo, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said: “Patrick brings extensive leadership experience, a strong understanding of international development, and a proven ability to guide organisations through periods of transition.”

Patrick’s appointment will help ensure continuity and momentum across the organisation, enabling teams to remain focused on delivering impact throughout this transition, and maintaining Practical Action’s commitment to the communities it works with.
