Partnership in action: the naming of MS Riviera Radiance

By Practical Action - 01.12.2025 EnvironmentBlog

A celebratory naming ceremony for MS Riviera Radiance has brought together Riviera Travel and Practical Action in a powerful display of a shared commitment to global impact.

At the event — held in Budapest from 25 to 27 November — Sarah Roberts, CEO of Practical Action, officially named the latest addition to Riviera Travel’s fleet.

A partnership delivering real change

Sarah was there as part of a collaboration between Riviera Travel and Practical Action, which is creating life-changing work in Kisumu, Kenya, where communities face daily challenges in waste collection and environmental health.

As of May 2025, financial support from Riviera’s customers and through staff fundraising initiatives has:

  • Supported Practical Action’s waste-management programme — part of the “Clean Rivers, Clean Homes” initiative.
  • Distributed 4,000 waste bins to 2,000 households in informal settlements.
  • Trained 250 previously informal waste workers and connected them to local processing centres and traders.
  • Used a digital waste-tracking system to monitor around 40,000 kg of household waste diverted from dumping.

Sarah Roberts said: “These results show what’s possible when organisations committed to changing the world for good, join forces.

“It’s a real privilege to be part of this moment with Riviera Travel. What stands out to me about this partnership is how deeply our shared values run — a commitment to people, thoughtful choices, and to creating solutions that genuinely improve lives.

“We’re proud to work alongside Riviera Travel as they continue to show that travel and a positive impact on the world can go hand in hand.”

Why this matters

Riviera Travel’s growing commitment now contributes approximately £200,000 annually and has given Practical Action the stability to expand its work. This includes supporting vulnerable communities, improving waste-service infrastructure, and promoting dignity and safety for informal waste workers in Kisumu.
