Practical Action’s work in Peru has been announced as one of five winners of the Knowledge into Use awards.

The competition, launched in the lead up to the COP27 Resilience Hub, celebrates innovative and creative ways of creating and using resilience knowledge and included a $5,000 prize to be spent with local communities.

The winning entry is a community art competition and exhibition organised by Practical Action in the capital Lima together with two local municipal governments and Bristol University as part of our work with the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance. The contest titled “The district we want: resilient and safe” gathered stories and artworks from more than 30 community members, reflecting on their experiences of disasters and their wishes for a safer, more resilient future.

The artworks are also captured in a publication in Spanish, which helps centre the analysis of climate related hazards and searches for innovative approaches to disaster risk reduction based on the experiences and needs of those who have lived through disasters.

Miluska Ordoñez, from Practical Action in Peru said: “This is an important opportunity to amplify the voices of community leaders. We want to achieve greater dissemination of both the art works themselves and the publication. We also aim to replicate the experience in other districts and communities in the basin.”

We want to thank The Resilience Knowledge Coalition partners, not only for their recognition of Practical Action’s work, but for shining a light on the importance of creatively creating and sharing knowledge that contributes to making resilience a way of life in communities across the globe.
