Abstract
This learning brief explores how gender dynamics shape women’s access to and benefits from productive use of energy in agriculture (Ag-PUE) technologies, highlighting the structural, institutional, and social barriers they face. It documents how gendered power gap affect women and provides a framework and practical recommendations to guide gender-transformative interventions that promote equitable participation, resource control, and empowerment in energy-agriculture systems. The research that led to the development of the brief was conducted as part of Women in Energy Enterprises in Kenya (WEEK), a Practical Action project implemented in central Kenya. Over the last decade, the WEEK project has strengthened women’s capacity to effectively participate in energy markets as last-mile entrepreneurs of clean cooking and household lighting technologies. Now in its third phase, WEEK 3 (2022–26, SIDA funded) is piloting engagement with entrepreneurs utilizing renewable energy in agriculture.
