Evidence Report: Beyond cold storage, learning from postharvest assessments in Odisha State, India

Abstract

This report, drawing on Practical Action and Wageningen University’s 2025–26 assessments of strawberry and tomato value chains in Odisha, India, sets out lessons for anyone working to reduce food loss. It illustrates how postharvest loss is a systems issue that requires an understanding of agricultural and market systems that lead to losses, if effective interventions are to be developed.. The report recommends an approach, that focusses first on low-cost improvements in farm practice, coordination between market actors and better farmer aggregation. It is suggested that infrastructure investments, such as cold storage, are appropriate once markets mature. The report also shares lessons on using the Postharvest Assessment Methodology (PHAM) effectively.
