Turning energy access into income that lasts

At the Global Off-Grid Solar Forum and Expo in Kigali, Practical Action is making the case for investment in the productive use of energy: the models, markets and finance that turn a solar connection into a working business, a better harvest or a reliable service.

There is no shortage of investment in energy access. But energy can do much more. It has the ability to transform lives. If we’re to meet global access targets, investment needs to go further, turning energy into livelihoods, resilience and opportunity for the people markets have not yet reached. Backing what works is how the sector turns ambition into access that lasts.

Energy access is only meaningful when it is affordable, inclusive and reliable, helping people earn a living and meet their needs. Solutions work best when technology, business models, finance and value chains across energy and agriculture are designed together, rather than tackling them in isolation.

When people can get energy on fair terms, they run businesses, power farms and clinics, and reach new markets.

Our focus

Affordability and reaching the last mile

The hardest-to-reach places are not lost causes; they are simply underserved markets.

The main barrier is rarely technical. It’s cost. For over 600 million people in Africa, energy remains out of reach, meaning universal targets are at risk of being missed. This includes people living in extreme poverty or hard to reach settings such as rural area or refugee camps. Often, these go together. The solution to this problem is investing in last mile distributors and offering tailored support to the market mechanisms and businesses who serve these communities.

Energy has the power to transform livelihoods

Energy has the ability to create secure livelihoods: the foundation of wellbeing, dignity and choice.

As well as meeting people’s basic needs, energy access can be a game changer. When clean energy responds to farmers and business’ needs, energy access can create livelihoods and opportunities, increasing productivity and economic growth across value chains, as well as allowing people to sustain their energy access.

Let’s connect

We want to meet funders, investors, governments, policymakers and partners ready to back energy that reaches the last mile and turns access into income. We are especially keen to talk about the productive use of energy, energy markets in displacement settings, and finance that gets working capital to last-mile businesses.

What this looks like in practice

Making energy work: High upfront costs, limited awareness and weak local supply chains make energy access a critical constraint in hard-to-reach settings. Without reliable power refugees and many rural communities can’t preserve food, process agricultural products, carry out trades or other productive activities. We want to increase incomes, create opportunities and build self-reliance for displaced and host communities.

Bringing access to humanitarian settings: Whether it’s to power a business, light a school or allow families to cook safely at home, we’re bringing access to clean, reliable energy to Rwanda’s refugee camps. We’re reducing reliance on aid by strengthening local markets that in turn creates jobs and opportunities.

Last-mile market at scale: The Global Distributors Collective, hosted by Practical Action with partner Bopinc, connects more than 300 last-mile distribution businesses across 60 countries. Its members have reached over 60 million people since 2018 with solar lights, clean cookstoves and other essentials.
