Food
Because farmers should have fair access to the skills, tools and markets they need to thrive, even as the climate changes.
Food systems shape how food is grown, processed, sold, consumed and how waste is handled. They underpin livelihoods, determine who eats well, and place heavy demands on the natural world.
Today’s food systems are under strain. Global food systems and industrial agriculture contribute to climate change, while degraded soils, biodiversity loss and unpredictable weather make it harder for small-scale farmers to earn a living. These pressures fall hardest on women, young people and marginalised groups, limiting incomes, food security and future options.
At Practical Action, we work alongside communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to co-create food systems that are:
- Environmentally sustainable
- Economically viable
- Resilient to climate change
- Inclusive of women, youth, and other marginalised groups
We work across food systems to make them fairer, more resilient and more sustainable. We support regenerative farming, reduce food loss through better storage and processing, and help farmers reach fairer markets. We also strengthen links between farming and healthy ecosystems, support circular approaches that put nutrients back into the soil, and back local markets that help more people access affordable, safe food.
What sets our work apart is its local leadership, strong market focus and long-term evidence base. The result is more secure livelihoods, healthier ecosystems, better health, and food systems able to withstand a changing climate.
