Documentary video highlights 15 years of indigenous climate action in the Peruvian Amazon
At Practical Action, we believe that tackling the climate crisis requires recognizing and strengthening the leadership of indigenous peoples, who are key players in the conservation of the Amazon. In this regard, through the BLF Andes Amazon project, funded by UK International Development through the Biodiverse Landscapes Fund (BLF), we work in partnership with the Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest (AIDESEP) and other indigenous organizations in Peru and Ecuador to promote proposals that originate in their territories and highlight their knowledge, innovations, and forms of organization.
Within this framework, AIDESEP presented the documentary “Indigenous Climate Action in the Peruvian Amazon: 15 Years of Challenges and Innovations,” an audiovisual work that recognizes and commemorates the leadership of the indigenous movement in the fight against climate change. Spanning fifteen years of progress, challenges, and lessons learned, this documentary is a tribute to the commitment, autonomy, and capacity for innovation of indigenous peoples. At the same time, it invites reflection on the challenges that still persist in the defense of their territories and ways of life.
Highlighting indigenous leadership in climate action
The documentary presents emblematic experiences such as the titling of communal lands, advances in the development of Amazonian Indigenous REDD+, the valuation of ecosystem services, the commitment to a bioeconomy based on the sustainable use of standing forests, as well as the design and implementation of autonomous climate adaptation plans.
These initiatives reflect a vision that has emerged from the territories themselves, combining tradition and innovation to protect ecosystems and respect worldviews. More than a recounting, the documentary is a tribute: “a look at the past to build a better future,” emphasizes Jorge Pérez Rubio, president of AIDESEP.
Alliances that add to the indigenous agenda
The making of this documentary was led by AIDESEP, with technical assistance from Practical Action through the BLF Andes Amazon project. This collaboration reflects a shared purpose: to strengthen the capacities of indigenous organizations and support their voices taking center stage in decision-making on climate change.
Along the same lines, Practical Action in Latin America works in partnership with indigenous peoples in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia to promote solutions from the territories. Our commitment is to work alongside communities vulnerable to climate change, helping them to protect their livelihoods and improve their well-being in a sustainable way. With the goal of building a more equitable and resilient future, we take a comprehensive approach that recognizes the connection between the climate crisis, poverty, and biodiversity loss. To this end, we foster partnerships and combine local knowledge with innovative technologies, which are shared and scaled up thanks to our experience in Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
