Head Office

Practical Action's work in the UK

Practical Action's head office in the UK provides assistance to all other regional and country offices in the areas of finance, capacity building, technical support and marketing, helping local offices to focus on the main objectives of poverty alleviation.

Head Office provides programme support to our regional and country offices, helping them to source expertise, build capacity and coordinate funding opportunities. It also distills learning from projects and programmes, so that our work can be scaled up for greater impact.

A key part of this is the Practical Answers technical information service, which provides free materials and advice. Practical Action's Education unit also offers a range of support services for teachers and young people looking to address sustainable development within their teaching and learning.

The offices at the Schumacher Centre near Rugby are also the location for our consulting arm Practical Action Consulting, which provides high quality, independent and professional advice to governments, NGOs, aid agencies and the private sector, and publishing wing Practical Action Publishing, which also operates in book retailing via mail order and the internet (

Practical Action also tackles the underlying causes of poverty by campaigning to influence policies, institutions and processes. Through its campaigning and advocacy, Practical Action aims to achieve greater and more lasting impact from its work. We carry out advocacy work on issues including climate change, energy access, water and sanitation, markets, disaster risk reduction, agriculture and technology justice.

Public fundraising in the UK is coordinated from the Head Office, supplying around half of Practical Action's income.
