Almost one billion people don’t have access to the electricity that has the power to transform all aspects of life
Electricity can improve health, education and opportunities to earn a better living. However, most of the people who live in poor remote communities have little hope of gaining access to electricity that could power their progress.
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, with most of its population living in rural communities that are not connected to grid electricity. The demand for electricity is huge. Communities need it to power their businesses, schools and hospitals. Parents need it for earning an income, as well as cooking and refrigerating food. And, as daylight fades, children need it for safety and study.
Many families are forced to rely on charcoal or firewood to light and heat their homes and to cook food.
Families spend a huge proportion of their income and countless hours gathering these fuels – time and money they could otherwise spent on education, healthcare and earning an income.
The ingenious solution
We know access to clean and affordable energy has the power to transform all aspects of life.
That’s why we work in the most remote communities, helping people shift their lives from disadvantage to opportunity.
A unique combination of renewable hydro-electric power, skills training and knowledge sharing is already transforming lives in Malawi.
Our work with local partners in Mulange has brought clean, renewable energy to nearly 30,000 people. Six schools, three business centres and a health clinic now have electricity.
For families in rural villages this means more business opportunities and better health and education services. It’s transforming all aspects of their lives and helping them thrive in one of the poorest countries in the world.
“Now, with the coming of electricity, I just have to buy the electricity tokens to put in the meter. It is far cheaper and it saves me time. My business is four times more profitable now.”
