This is a charter of ambitious and practical action to help the private sector accelerate their progress towards a sustainable future.

“The ‘Terra Carta’ offers the basis of a recovery plan that puts Nature, people and planet at the heart of global value creation – one that will harness the precious, irreplaceable power of Nature combined with the transformative innovation and resources of the private sector.”
His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales

The Terra Carta’s focus on putting Nature, people, planet at the heart of the economy, aligns well with Practical Action’s mission and approach.

Working with the private sector is vital to achieving systems change at scale and mobilising the finance needed for people and the planet. We have over 50 years’ experience bringing together the right people with the right expertise to build solutions that work for the communities that need them most.

We’re demonstrating the transformative power of collaborating with private sector in our work with communities around the world.

As a founding member of the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance, we’re partnering with one of the world’s largest insurers to strengthen resilience to flood risk in at-risk communities across three continents.

Our work with the Global Distributors Collective is supporting last mile distributors to help them reach millions of unserved customers with life-changing sustainable products such as solar lights, and developing last mile distribution markets as a whole.

We’re teaming up with smallholder farmers and local businesses in East Africa to establish vibrant and inclusive economies by promoting agricultural livelihoods underpinned by sustainable principles and practices.

The Terra Carta provides a roadmap to 2030 to achieve the ambition of the Sustainable Markets Initiative. We believe it has the potential to dramatically shift corporate business models and change the enabling environment so that it encourages investment and action in a sustainable future and mobilises the financial system behind these goals.

“The Terra Carta’s focus on building out from local realities to achieve a global economy that has nature, people and planet at its heart and its focus on a just and sustainable transition aligns with our aims and the ethos of our founder, visionary economist E.F. Schumacher.”
Sarah Roberts, Chief Executive, Practical Action

We’ll be supporting this critical work and will be sharing examples, insights and progress from around the world where Practical Action is working in partnership with the private sector to create a more sustainable future.
