School is cool!

Children have a right to education and providing the basic conditions necessary for learning is the first step.  

Many rural homes and schools in Peru lack basic services such as electricity and drinking water.  With no electricity in their homes or schools a digital gulf has opened up between rural and urban areas of Peru. This has an impact on educational achievement.

Sub-zero temperatures experienced in winter affect both performance and attendance at schools without heating, and increase respiratory disease. 

To address this problem, Practical Action has been working with the local authorities to install low-cost, easy-to-maintain power, water and sanitation and internet access.  This package of improvement will together help to improve the quality of education in these remote, rural areas, to the delight of both children and parents. For Roberto, fractions are now a game. José reads poetry. Evelyn practices Quechua and Ana seeks to master mental arithmetic. 

As one father, Vicente Quispe Pacocha, put it, “Children who learn to use the computer today have a better chance of growing up and being professionals. Today this is an opportunity."

Children can be agents of change in their families, their communities and for their country.

"My son shares what he has learned with me, he teaches me what he has learned from me and my youngest daughter, he comes to the house and shows me his work, we all learn", says another father Brodelin Huamán. 

The active participation of communities helps find the best way to deal with the local problems they identify.  We combine local knowledge and our experience to solve these together. Along with installation are training and awareness-raising workshops for community personnel on the use, maintenance and safety of the technologies.

Making change that lasts

Our projects are designed to last.  These are some of the ways we ensure this.

  1. We work in collaboration with the whole educational community, principals, teachers, students, parents and community leaders to ensure they can manage and maintain the new facilities.
  2. We use local expertise and resources to design and implement the improvements.
  3. We encourage the active participation of students in the work so that they support and promote the use of ICTs with their parents and teachers.
  4. We build relationships with local, regional and national government to ensure sustainability in the long term. As Mary Hurtado, Education Specialist of the Regional Education Department of Apurímac explains, “It has been possible to close the existing gap between the learning achieved by children in urban areas and children in rural areas. By providing them with the necessary conditions, these children have responded and improved their skills and abilities.”
