The Programmes Delivery Leader will lead a team of project team leaders/coordinators/managers in delivering projects in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and Malawi, and work closely with the systems and innovation leads, the M&E team, specialists in the consulting team, finance and coordinators in Gender and Knowledge Management. The core purpose of this role is to ensure effective, quality and timely delivery of all projects within contract budgets, in line with the Projects and Awards Management System (PAMS) and related organisational policies and procedures. The post-holder and their team will manage operational relationships with communities, partners and relevant government departments. As a member of the SMT, s/he will collaborate closely with senior colleagues to ensure integration of approaches.   

The Programmes Delivery Leader will provide leadership and management across all five core areas of the strategy:  to achieve change and impact, to strengthen organisational profile, lead and manage people, support generation of funds and manage relationships, and deliver performance.  Accountabilities are indicated below with approximate level of effort against each.


  • First degree in a project/programme management related field and a Master’s degree in a related field At least 15 years of working experience of which at least 5 years in the rural energy access or agriculture thematic area in Southern Africa and/ or other developing countries, including experience of managing complex development projects over $2m.
  • Experience working with energy technology and innovation will be an added advantage
  • In-depth understanding of project and programme delivery issues in Zimbabwe and Malawi
  • Ability to manage delivery of short term and long term and cross sectoral programs, using project and programme management systems methodically and accurately
  • Ability to train and develop field staff
  • Ability to effectively represent the regional office, the organisation and Practical Action’s work
  • Excellent report writing, analytical and communication skills
  • Excellent oral presentation skills and in-depth knowledge and experience in major donor reporting requirements
  • Excellent ability to work with virtual cross-functional teams
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and set priorities
  • Fluency in English
  • Capability in ICT based reporting and filing systems.
