Municipal waste to energy work receives policy attention in Bangladesh

A two members’ team including chairman and member from Sustainable Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) under the Ministry of Power visited municipal waste to biogas and composting plants in Gaibandha. The team interacted with waste collectors and processors, community facilitators of SMS (an NGO based in Gaibandha) to learn the process, monitoring mechanism to assess service user’s satisfaction, big challenges and prospects.
The team met with Gaibandha Municipality to learn the benefit of these schemes, how partnerships is monitored to run this business and prospects for replication in other parts of the town as well as in other cities. The team highly praised the innovative technological work and functional collaboration among government and non-government agencies which is very much needed for sustainable urban environment, energy and food security and finally poverty reduction.
The team expressed their willingness for nationwide scaling up of Waste to Biogas model and invited Practical Action to technically support on this.
The visit has strengthened the relationship with SREDA which will help to carry out PPEO 2015 and Moving Energy Initiative research works. SREDA confirmed its support to establish two mini grids in Gaibandha to solve the electricity and associated problems and requested both District and Municipal Administration to provide necessary land at the earliest.
