About the role
We are looking for a dynamic and ambitious young professional to work as the Junior Climate Resilience Advisor. You will join Practical Action West Africa office and be part of the resilient agriculture team.
Practical Action ambition in West Africa is to see smallholder farmers and low income communities increase their resilience to climate related risks through access to accurate and timely information and adapted knowledge services that enable them to manage risks more effectively and take actions that deliver tangible livelihood benefits. We focus on delivering change in the francophone countries of West Africa and the Sahel.
As the Junior Climate Resilience Advisor, you will play a key role in supporting to the delivery of Practical Action’s Climate and Resilience strategy for West Africa regional office in Dakar. The role will primarily be to deliver impact for PA through a consulting approach (PAC) of technical assistance delivery. The job holder will be mostly working on a new project to extend the reach and impact of the Flood Resilience Portal to francophone West Africa in collaboration with Practical Action UK as part of their role in the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance (ZFRA) and the Dakar based organization Innovation-Environment-Development Afrique (IED-Afrique).
In addition, the candidate will support the Senior Agriculture and Livelihoods Advisor in the development of Practical Action climate resilience work in the region, including carrying out research and consultancy work, providing technical input to Practical Action’s projects in the region, contributing to secure new work, building the network of associates, and facilitating joint working with Practical Action’s other regional and country offices in Africa and UK.
Critical success of the role will be the ability to demonstrate proven knowledge and/or experience in climate risks, flood management, resilient livelihoods, sustainable land management, information and knowledge services. The role will require some existing experience of working in a consultancy, research or related environment on development/delivery. You will be expected to work collaboratively and in a small team environment as well as work dynamically and flexibly across a wide range of issues and activities, according to shifting opportunities and directions.

You have knowledge of the international climate and flood resilience sector relating to climate risk management, and international development more broadly. You also have a strong interest in the areas of rural information and knowledge services, renewable energy for climate resilient livelihoods, participatory action-research.
You also have a background in geography, social sciences, agronomy, natural sciences, urban planning, civil/hydraulic engineering, international development or equivalent.
Ideally you have some experience in consultancy, research or similar context on project/proposal development and delivery.
You are confident at conducting documentary and other research and report writing.
You are a good communicator and eager to improve your skills by undertaking learning-by-doing and more formal learning/training to develop/widen knowledge and skills to support undertaking of the role.
