Riding Waves - fishing livelihoods after the tsunami
The 2004 tsunami devastated most of Sri Lanka's coastline. The tsunami not only affected the coastal people physically and psychologically, it swept away their means of survival - fishing.
A large proportion of the coastal people in Sri Lanka are directly or indirectly employed in the fishing industry, and so helping people regain their livelihoods is an essential part of rebuilding.
Riding Waves looks at how rebuilding fishing livelihoods involves more than handing over boats. This film explores how an approach which involves consultation, capacity building, local knowledge and participation, and a wider view of developing a sector, can lead to successful results on the ground.
