Practical Action's work in the UK
Practical Action's head office in the UK provides assistance to all other regional and country offices in the areas of finance, capacity building, technical support and marketing, helping local offices to focus on the main objectives of poverty alleviation.
International programmes are coordinated from the head office, as are Practical Action's public fundraising activities. The Technical Information Service is also coordinated from here, within Practical Action's UK resource centre, which is open to the public by prior arrangement.
Practical Action's Education unit offers a range of support services for teachers and young people looking to address sustainable development within their teaching and learning.
Practical Action's head office at the Schumacher Centre for Technology and Development near Rugby is also the location for its consulting arm Practical Action Consulting (formerly ITC), which provides high quality, independent and professional advice to governments, NGOs, aid agencies and the private sector, and publishing wing Practical Action Publishing, which also operates in book retailing via mail order and the internet (developmentbookshop.com).
Practical Action also tackles the underlying causes of poverty by campaigning to influence policies, institutions and processes. Through its campaigning and advocacy, Practical Action aims to achieve greater and more lasting impact from its work. We are currently campaigning to Stop Climate Injustice. We also carry out advocacy work on other issues including agricultural biodiversity, energy for the poor, technology democracy and European aid.

The Schumacher Centre for Technology and Development
Practical Action’s UK Head Office, The Schumacher Centre for Technology and Development is based at Bourton on Dunsmore, six miles from Rugby in Warwickshire.
Practical Action (then ITDG) moved to its new offices in April 1998 and envisages the Schumacher Centre for Technology and Development – as a fitting memorial to our founder, Fritz Schumacher – evolving as a national and international centre for knowledge and expertise on technology, poverty reduction and the environment.
An example of wind power is installed in the grounds, with plans to follow this with a solar energy demonstration. The Centre already hosts an excellent resource centre, international technical enquiry service and a number of international knowledge sharing initiatives.
