UN Framework Convention on Climate Change COP-12/MOP2
UN Framework Convention on Climate Change COP-12/MOP2
Nairobi, 6th-17th November 2006
As the United Nations held talks on climate change in Nairobi, covering the recent Stern Report and post-Kyoto agreements, only two hours away people are already suffering from the effects of climate change.
Practical Action climate change experts were there, and together with Tearfund, Oxfam GB and ActionAid offered recommendations for action on climate change based on our experience of working with communities and through partners in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
Practical Action activities at the conference included:
-
Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change 9 November
Community-based adaptation to climate change is feasible, but it cannot be done solely by projects: an enabling institutional and policy environment must be created and lesson-learning must be shared. Experiences from Tearfund and Practical Action and their partners were presented. -
March of Kenyan civil society groups 11 November
We mobilised pastoralists from our project in Magadi who joined with around 5,000 people in this demonstration. More ... | Blog report -
Practical Action had a stand within the conference
Six publications have been produced specifically for this event, including briefings on Adaptation Policy, Energy, Biofuels and specific projects. We also have a stand at the NGO centre away from the UN site.
Summary of recommendationsAdaptation initiatives agreed at COP12, especially the five-year Programme of Work, should take into account the tools and methodologies of the disaster management community, including the priorities and activities agreed at the World Conference on Disaster Reduction in January 2005 and presented in the Hyogo Framework for Action. These activities can support and strengthen implementation of Articles 4,5,6 and 12 of the UNFCCC, Article 10 of the Kyoto Protocol, and COP decisions on implementation of Article 4.8 and 9 of the Convention, in particular 5/CP.7 and the National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPA) process. These activities should also contribute to the SBSTA programme of work on scientific, technical and socio-economic aspects of climate change. |
