Issue six, April 2004.
Last year, ITDGPractical Action introduced a new worldwide strategy to strengthen its fight against poverty. The new strategy has four main aims: reducing vulnerability, making markets work, improving access to services, and responding to new technologies. One year on, ITDGPractical Action Sudan is directing its programmes to implement the strategy. Issue six of Sharing looks at two of the four aims, and the ways in which ITDGPractical Action is working to achieve them.

Issue four, October 2003
After floods in Kassala devastated the town in July and August, this issue of Sharing looks at the extremities of Sudan’s hard climate. The ongoing struggle with water is a critical issue – the lack of it in the north and west and the sudden excess in the east and south.
For ITDGPractical Action staff in Kassala the reality hit home. Their personal accounts of the flood highlight the immediate danger and the long-term damage of flash flooding. At the same time, staff in Darfur are working steadily to conserve water under the constant threat of drought.

Building Small-Scale Water Harvesting Dams
The experience of ITDG North Darfur State, Western Sudan by Mohamed Majzoub Fidiel
The manual reflects Practical Action (formerly ITDG) experiences, specifically in the building of dams, and demonstrates the quick impact that dams can make on people livelihoods.

| The Human Situation in Northern Darfur A ground-based survey by Practical Action undertaken in February and March 2004 showed systematic destruction of people’s possessions and food stocks. Around a million people were displaced and 60% of the villages had been destroyed or abandoned. This report is retained here for reference purposes, but does not describe the current situation in Darfur. |
