"Biogas is the most appropriate renewable energy source for an agricultural country like Sri Lanka," said Mr G.K Upawansha president of the Lanka Bio Gas Association welcoming the participants for the inauguration of the Lanka Bio Gas Association on the 28th of August 2008 at Galle Face Hotel. This event was organised by the Lanka Bio Gas Association in collaboration with Practical Action.
Prof Ajith De Alwis speaking about the aims and way forward of the Lanka Biogas Association stated "Bio gas has unique capabilities as an environmental management tool, source of clean energy and as a resource for sustainable agriculture management". The Lanka Biogas Association was ceremonially launched by Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Minister of Science and Technology. Mr Athula Jayamanne, Vice President of the Lanka Biogas Association addressing the gathering explained the process towards the launch of the Lanka Biogas association and the support provided for it by different institutions. Promoting bio gas as a renewable energy resource that is substantial will be a major challenge that the Lanka Biogas association will have to address stated Mr Parakrama Jayasinghe, President of the Bio Energy Association. Speaking further Mr.Jayasinghe said "Even if we come across fossil fuel resources within the country we do not have the right to burn it up entirely on our own but also to leave it for future generations".
The launch of the Lanka Biogas Association will bring about a new era of development as promotion of biogas in Sri Lanka; will mean having an effective system that helps manage bio-degradable waste, to produce clean energy and to provide valued inputs to organic agriculture.
