Practical Action's South Asia office works to improve the livelihoods of the poor and disadvantaged in Nepal and India by implementing sustainable development. We aim to achieve this by building technical skills and undertaking the research, application and dissemination of appropriate technologies.
The guiding principles of Practical Action South Asia Regional Office are technology justice, innovation and scaling up.
During the 2012-17 strategic period, we have prioritised working areas into four main sectors and two cross-cutting sectors (markets and climate change), realising our comparative advantages in these sectors:
“The gift of material goods makes people dependent, but the gift of knowledge makes them free...
Practical Action is committed to poverty alleviation in Nepal by providing appropriate technology in a sustainable way by bringing sound technical knowledge and global experience to the field of appropriate technology development.
Our head office is in Kathmandu. We have regional offices in Chitwan and Nepalgunj, Banke, and field offices in Doti.
The state of Odisha (formerly Orissa) lies on the eastern coast of India. Practical Action has been working in Odisha for several years, and projects there are now coordinated from our local office in Odisha, as part of our South Asia office where where our Practical Answers technical information service in India is also coordinated..
Practical Action Consulting also have an office in Delhi.
Working directly with communities, we help provide poor people in Bangladesh with the skills and opportunities to build a secure livelihood for their families - from kitchen waste for cooking to improving farming techniques, or building safer houses to installing flood-proof water wells.
Our work in Bangladesh is coordinated through a separate country office.
On 25 April 2015 a massive earthquake hit Nepal. Many people we work with in three of our projects in Gorkha, Pokhara and Kathmandu were seriously affected. Our staff delivered emergency help with sanitation, hygiene, drinking water, energy and shelter, and we are now planning reconstruction.
We are helping people rebuild their houses with earthquake resilient technologies, and we will continue to support communities to be resilient in the future, with infrastructure work for drinking water, sanitation and energy, and disaster-preparedness.
Practical Action Consulting (PAC) takes the lessons learned from the work of Practical Action and pushes them out across a much broader geographic region in pursuit of scale and influence.
Practical Action Consulting South Asia work in Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and India, and deliver indirectly through partners in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Our technical information service offers free downloads of practical information on a range of development topics, with content in English, Nepali and Bangla.
We also have a technical enquiry service where anyone working in poverty reduction, or on small-scale technology projects, can ask a question and receive a response from our local experts free of charge.
We take the learning from projects and research, and share it to scale up the impact of our work.
You can browse and download research and policy papers produced by Practical Action South Asia in our online library.
