Solar power in Peru
Solar power brings light to Peruvian people
High in the Peruvian Andes, in a house made of mud and straw the Quispe family live in a single room.
In addition to freezing winters and summer droughts the family contends with a complete lack of sanitation, running water and electricity. They struggle to earn £180 a year growing potatoes and raising Alpacas.
Watch this video to see how their lives have changed since electricity came to their home
Right now Practical Action is working with 11 communities to provide:
- basic sanitation
- clean water
- renewable energy
In addition to micro-generation, we have installed appliances which are easy to maintain but don’t use a lot of electricity - equipment such as solar lanterns, solar water heaters and improved cooking facilities. We have also recruited “Kamayoqs”, local experts who are trained to run and continue the work.
