Energy

The energy programme has carried out consultancies for such organisations as: World Bank, UNDP, EEC, Inter-American Development Bank, Shell, DEP/MEN, etc.

Consultancies can be offered in the following areas:
Resource evaluation; feasibility studies; design engineering; financial evaluation of hydroelectric, eolic and fotovoltaic generation systems; design and implementation of water supply systems; setting up of companies to manage small isolated electricity generating and water supply systems; technical, organisational and management training; technology development and transfer of renewable energy and water supply equipment; design and implementation of energy efficiency programmes for small businesses; socio-economic baseline studies and project evaluation; studies of rural energy markets; management of international cooperation resources.

Disasters

The disaster management programme offers consultancies and training in the following areas:

High Resolution Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the analysis and evaluation of threats, vulnerabilities and specific risks in urban and rural situations.

DesInventar: Methodology and database software for constructing a disaster inventory enabling identification of risks in different environments, and at different resolution levels. Desinventar records data on deaths, health, damage to property and infrastructure and effects on productive sectors.

Risk Identification: Participatory methods for risk identification and local planning for risk management and local and regional development.

Also: specialist advice on risk analysis, damage evaluation, impact evaluation, rehabilitation, reconstruction and development planning.

Research

The Local Management of Development project offers the following services :

  • Participatory Rural Appraisal
  • Strategic planning for Regional, Provincial and District development
    Technical assistance in the elaboration of local development plans and income generating projects.
  • Strategic planning; project management; project monitoring and evaluation; strengthening of technical and administrative capabilities; financial management; human development; conflict resolution.

Information and Communications Technologies

The area offers training and technical assistance in the following:

  • Inclusion of an ICT perspective in development projects
  • Use and application of ICTs
  • Design and management of telecentres
  • Production of business plans for electricity provision and job creation.

ICT policies for local government
ITDGPractical Action works with local and regional government on policies designed to a) promote private investment in telecommunications; b) create a common regulatory framework (intellectual property rights, sale of electricity, certification, taxation, payment methods) in Latin America; c) establish transparent management procedures; d) create spaces for direct participation of local populations in national and local decision-making.

Combining traditional communication systems with ICTs and demonstrating the advantages of such linkages.
