Clean positive energy
Practical Action has long been renowned for its developments in renewable energy sources, particularly in Peru where access to grid electricity is especially challenging. Our colleagues in Peru picked up a trophy along with $100,000 in prize money from the 2008 UNEP Sasakawa Prize in recognition for its substantial contribution to the protection and management of the environment.
The award was made in response to their work in the eastern Andes, where Practical Action has installed micro-hydro schemes, bringing clean power to over 30,000 people, while at the same time increasing local industry.
Regional Director, Alfonso Carasco, received the award at a UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) ceremony in Kenya in February 2009.
