Improving access to infrastructure services
Practical Action Sudan
Most of the beneficiaries reached under this programme are from war and drought displaced groups. Practical Action Sudan facilitates their direct access to infrastructure services such as water, sanitation, energy, shelter and transport.
It also encourages their access to basic services through linking them to public and private service providers and by increasing their income so they can pay their health and education bills.
Three projects are currently active under this programme:
- Low-smoke Stoves in El Fashir
- Improving the Livelihoods of Kassala Town Population
- Increasing Access to Services for Kassala Rural Population, including charcoal production from mesquite
In addition, the Access to Services programme supports the technical enquiry service, Practical Answers.
During 2007-8, 217,000 poor people in peri-urban settlements of Kassala, Gedarif and Blue Nile and Darfur have benefited directly from improved access to water and sanitation, energy and shelter services, with an additional 20,000 people generating higher incomes from the delivery of these services.
