PRACTICAL ACTION PUBLISHING TO MANAGE OXFAM GB’S BOOK PUBLISHING FOR DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONALS

Oxfam GB and Practical Action Publishing have signed an agreement to publish new international development books aimed at the professional development audience over the next five years, effective from 1 December 2008. Practical Action Publishing has now taken on the management of Oxfam's past publications, comprising some 400 titles for international relief and development practitioners. The two organisations will work in partnership to develop at least four new titles each year based on Oxfam's work.

Practical Action Publishing (formerly Intermediate Technology Publications and ITDG Publishing) has been a wholly owned not-for-profit publishing company within the Practical Action group (formerly ITDG) since 1974. It specialises in publishing practical manuals and policy-relevant reports for international development practitioners.

Practical Action Publishing Managing Director Toby Milner explains: “Oxfam's publishing and our own have an obvious overlap and the synergies in working together were quickly made clear. We very much look forward to developing a range of new titles with Oxfam GB.”

Founded in 1942, Oxfam is now one of the largest non-governmental organisations in the world, concentrating on international emergency relief and development work. Its programme generates information and knowledge that it seeks to share with others working in the field of development, to improve both practice and policy.

Oxfam GB’s Programme PolicyDirector, Sam Bickersteth, said yesterday: “It is vital that we increase the value of learning from our development, campaigns, and humanitarian practice by sharing it with others workingto overcome poverty. This partnership with Practical Action Publishingprovides us with an opportunity to do that more effectively.”

While the initial focus of the agreement is on print publishing, Oxfam and Practical Action Publishing will also be working on developing a wider range of e-books and electronic publications.

Oxfam’s two journals, Gender and Development and Development in Practice, will continue to be published by Routledge. Oxfam will also continue to work on a range of free print and online resources to share its learning.
