Food preservation

Food preservation is an important element in global food security. Pupils at KS4 ( 14-16 years) explore why food needs to be preserved and the science behind different preservation techniques within a global setting.

Comprehensive teacher's notes, pupil worksheets and a range of support materials, including Powerpoints, technical briefs and videos, reduces preparation time to a minimum and results in a series of rich, engaging, enquiry -based lessons backed up by secondary sources of information.

Food preservation

In this pair of lesson pupils look at the important role of food preservation in terms of reducing food waste. They investigate what happens to food during decay and the different methods of preservation.

Pupils consider the effect of temperature on microbes, and investigate how temperature affects the growth of yeast. They also learn how to build a zeer pot, an electricity free fridge.

An investigation into osmosis helps pupils understand the scientific process behind solar drying, a major technique used to preserve food in the developing world. Pupils also design a solar dryer.
