Practical Action, India

Our works are mostly evolved from evidence-based research and need-based studies. We analyse and then implement to improve the lives of marginalised communities. We have done a few extensive studies to know the pattern and need of different means to make life easy and bring about change which later helped us to design our projects and work on them.

Gender and Livelihoods Impacts of Clean Cookstoves in Odisha (GAAC)

With an objective to analyse the impacts of clean cooking solutions on women in Odisha, GAAC (Gender and Livelihoods Impacts of Clean Cook stoves) study was conducted and the outcome has resulted in successful implementation of a unique project called ACCESS in the district of Koraput.

This project has ensured the participation of women and resulted in bringing out a smokeless cook stove solely designed by the community and proved effective and user friendly.
Looking at the physical and social burden on women of cooking and also the allied potential health hazards attached to existing cooking system, the study provided with basic information on the depth of the situation and later helped in conceptualising project ACCESS which is now helping communities in many ways.

Odisha State Sanitation Landscape

Practical Action carried out and extensive survey on different ULBs (Urban Local Bodies) under the heading of “Odisha State Sanitation Landscape”.

The in-scope geographies of this study were the nine Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Odisha with population over 100,000. This study was conceptualised to support the WSH team of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, who were sought to understand the urban sanitation landscape in the State as a first step towards assessing whether there are potential strategic partnerships to be entered into in the state which leverage city sanitation plans in progressive and interested cities.

The study produced a detailed report on the issues and concerns related to water and sanitation of those ULBs. The idea behind such study was to support the BMGF for their strategic partnerships aiming at demonstrating how innovations in sanitation service delivery might be rolled out, and/or to contribute to creating the enabling environment for quality sanitation service provision for all.
