In Bangladesh, the poorest families literally live on the edge; struggling to survive on river embankments, which, along with their prospects of escaping poverty, are eroded away each year.

Practical Action is working with communities across Sirajgonj district to create low-cost, flood-proof housing. Drawing on local knowledge and readily available materials, simple improvements can help a house stay standing throughout the monsoon season.

After years of living on a river embankment, Mansur Ali and his family now have a new 'flood-proof' home, which they built in partnership with Practical Action. For the very first time, they can look forward to a flood-free future.

Each day is a struggle for Shahar; she works hard to earn a living and to build a secure home for her family. But often her home, along with her hopes for a better future, is destroyed by flooding.
