An ingenious source of vital, safe, clean water
Without water, we die. Yet in drought- prone Africa, it can take women and children many hours waiting in line to hand-pump even a meagre amount of water from the nearest borehole. Worse still, because there is often nowhere to store water, they are forced to repeat this exhausting task time and time again over the course of a day.
The answer is child's play
Working with the poor community of Kipsongo in Kenya, Practical Action introduced a water pump with an ingenious power supply - the energy of children at play. Every hour that this specially designed merry-go-round turns, it draws up 1400 litres from the borehole below - and channels it into a large storage tank. Now, women can draw up the water they need without having to endure hours of waiting and back-breaking work. As Monica Ekirata says, 'Now we have clean water whenever we want … we have uplifted the reputation of Kipsongo.'
