Toilets saving lives - Zimbabwe

Bellapaise Ecological Sanitation Project, Harare

People in Zimbabwe are no strangers to cholera - the poor water and sanitation infrastructure there makes outbreaks a frequent occurrence. But the last outbreak was particularly severe - spreading rapidly to affect over 100,000 people. For women like Theresa Kwenda, the situation was even more critical. Both she and her husband have been living with HIV and AIDS since 2001 so the possibility of catching cholera was a serious concern for her.

This video shows how the EcoSan toilet - cheap, easy to construct and sustainable - is an option that can provide a healthier environment for Theresa and others in her community.

Unfortunately the underlying poor infrastructure is still an issue in Zimbabwe, so it's likely that cholera will return again later this year. However, we hope that the example of our work can be replicated to help people in other areas.
