New Early Day Motion on indoor air pollution in developing countries
Susan Kramer MP, former Liberal Democrat Shadow International Development Secretary, has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) in support of Practical Action's work and calling for action from the government to find a global solution to indoor air pollution.
An EDM is a petition which MPs can sign to show their support for a particular issue and pressure the Government to act. This EDM gained the signatures of 87 Members of Parliament. Practical Action asked its supporters to write to their MPs to urge them to sign the EDM.
Early Day Motion 421: Indoor Air Pollution in developing countries
That this House notes with concern the devastating impact of indoor air pollution in the developing world which is responsible for the deaths of 1.5 million people annually; further notes that almost half of humanity cooks with solid fuels such as wood and charcoal, and are exposed to smoke which causes significant respiratory illness; acknowledges that women and children are the primary victims of death and disease caused by indoor air pollution; welcomes the work of Practical Action and its partners in reducing this threat and raising awareness of the issue; endorses the need for action orientated measures to address indoor air pollution and to improve access to reliable and affordable energy services, as identified by the UK Government at the 14th UN Commission on Sustainable Development; and urges the UK Government to extend its commitment to a global solution by making greater access to sustainable, affordable and cleaner energy for the poor and tackling indoor air pollution key priorities during the 15th UN Commission on Sustainable Development in April 2007.
