Climate Change and the Implications for People and Poverty

Adapting to climate change with floating garden rice cultivation in Bangladesh

Throughout 2008 and 2009, Practical Action Consulting delivered several successful one-day workshops on “Climate Change and the Implications for People and Poverty”. As climate change becomes increasingly urgent, more people are seeking to expand their understanding of the issues which surround it. This course not only clarifies the basics of climate change, such as how weather differs to climate, but also explores the myriad of factors that impact the negotiation processes involving our governments as they discuss this global crisis. Practical Action has a wealth of experience in working with those currently facing the realities of climate change – the poor in the less developed world – and the course showcases some of the projects it has already delivered to help people adapt their lifestyles and infrastructure in the face of their changing environment. PAC ran two of these courses in the run-up to Copenhagen at the end of 2009. These were attended by Directors, Senior Consultants, Project Managers and Department Heads from the likes of ICA:UK, IDL Group Limited, HelpAge International, Telefonica Europe PLC, WaterAid, Accenture, Mott MacDonald, HTSPE, ITAD and Harewelle International. As a direct consequence, PAC was invited to run a workshop for VSO as part of its Away Day on the development of its strategy on Climate Change. This involved over 40 of VSO’s team. Practical Action and PAC staff presented and facilitated the training. In addition to this, PAC’s Kenyan office won funding from IDRC to develop this climate change training further and carry out a series of training sessions. These have just been completed.

There are no further plans to run public training courses in 2010. However, Practical Action Consulting is able to deliver workshops directly to organizations as it did for VSO. If you would like to discuss this possibility, please contact Ella Jolly at: ella.jolly@practicalaction.org.uk
