Practical Action and Comic Relief
Practical Action and Comic Relief are working together to alleviate poverty in Africa.
One of our projects sets out to improve the living standards of 190,000 poor people who live in squalid conditions in the slums of Kisumu and Kitale in Kenya.
48% of the residents of Kisumu live in absolute poverty with inadequate clean water supplies and poor sanitation.
However with Practical Action's help, neighbourhoods in both slums are being transformed.
We are putting local people at the heart of the decision-making process so that they can decide what needs to change first and how it should be done. They can then make choices about the types of technologies and training best suited to their needs.
Residents will benefit from access to decent toilet facilities as well as reliable and affordable clean water supplies, and so they will be able to keep themselves and their loved ones safe from disease. Women and children will benefit in particular as they will be able to spend less time fetching water and this will allow more girls to attend school and gain a better education.
This is just one example of how Practical Action is working with local people to create simple and sustainable ways of tackling poverty. If you would like to support our work throughout the developing world, please donate today. Thank you.
