Director's view

The year 2008-2009 was our second year of the organization's five-year strategy in which we set ourselves the target of becoming a "leading authority on technology for poverty eradication." During this year we managed to reach 91,267 direct beneficiaries and 165,688 as indirect beneficiaries with our interventions in North Darfur, Kassala, Blue Nile and North Kordofan.

Despite insecurity in Darfur, we still managed to reach the targeted beneficiaries in rural areas by working through the networks of community based organizations (CBOs).

A new programme called Greening Darfur has been started in North Darfur, aiming at rehabilitating and developing natural resources and natural resource-based livelihoods. Working with 33 communities around El Fashir, the programme is hoping to test new ways of working and new development approaches.

To practically contribute to the efforts of reducing the effects of climate change, we set ourselves a target for reducing our own carbon footprint by 25% during the strategy period through a reduction in air and road travel, electricity consumption and other activities.

A series of knowledge products is being produced during this year in terms of knowledge sharing to be uploaded via our website (www.practicalaction.org/sudan). This year also witnessed the expansion of our networking to cover most NGOs, governmental authorities, research institutions and practitioners in Sudan.
