Alternative Energy in Internally Displaced Person Camps - Darfur
Dates: 2008
Location: Darfur, Sudan
Client: Oxfam
PAC was contracted to study the potential impacts of renewable energy options in four internally displaced person (IDP) camps in Darfur. This was to provide alternative solutions to the use of firewood, the collection of which was not only damaging to the environment but also places the collectors - specifically women and children - at risk of great harm. The report concluded that there is no one single solution for the problem of using firewood in IDP settings, but rather a range of integrated solutions (conservation, alternative fuels and generation of new fuel sources). This is because dissemination of alternative fuels will never completely stop all households from using firewood owing to the variety of reasons that some householders prefer this. However, widespread use of alternative fuels can lead to a significant drop in firewood and charcoal prices, so the report recommended that Oxfam GB should continue dissemination of improved woodstoves.
