This project aimed to enhance the potential for bicycles to meet the transport needs and to improve the quality of life of the rural poor by developing the capacity of partner organisations to develop and disseminate low cost cycle-based means of transport which respond to the needs of the poor people.
OutcomeThe Cycle Based Transport project was completed in 1997. As a result of the project, the National Transport Commission of Sri Lanka has undertaken a national level IMT promotional campaign. All partner organisations participated in the project have formed a network called "Gamana" (Journey). Practical Action's work has been scaled-up with two partner organisations. 16 manufacturers trained to make cycle trailers and extended bicycles. |
